The Best Time to Visit Cabo and Other Things to Know
Whales migrate from Alaska to the Baja California Peninsula during the months of December through April, making this time the best time to visit Cabo. It's the perfect opportunity to catch a whale-watching tour! You're likely to see humpbacks, gray whales, orcas, and, although less likely, you might even catch a glimpse of a blue or sperm whale on your tour.
While the best time to visit Cabo is during the months of December to April, it also makes it the busiest time of the year to visit as a result. Being peak tourist season, you can expect higher prices, longer wait times for popular restaurants, and crowded tours.
Hurricane season takes place from August to October, so you can expect higher winds and more rain if you plan to visit during this time. On top of this, the temperature regularly reaches over 90 degrees this time of year, with unrelenting heat and humidity.
Things to Know Before Visiting
Visiting a place for the first time can be exciting- and overwhelming! Here are some helpful tips to know before you go.
1. Check before you Swim
While beautiful beaches line Cabo, very few are swimmable. Avoid the Pacific side of Cabo specifically, as there are harsh waves and strong undercurrents. Take caution and always listen to the signs on the beach- they're there for a reason!
2. Travel Safe
The World Travel and Tourism Council has declared Cabo one of the safest places to travel, but you should always travel smart. Don't carry large amounts of cash on you at one time, don't walk around at night alone, and always be aware of your surroundings.
3. Don’t talk to people at the airport
To preserve your precious vacation time, be wary of who you speak to after getting off the plane. Timeshare representatives will try to talk to you right as you walk out of customs; unless you’re genuinely interested in buying a timeshare, you can quickly get roped into talking to a salesperson for hours.
4. Stick to bottled water outside of your resort
While almost all resorts and hotels have filtered water, you should stick to bottled water when visiting locations outside your resort. Many tourists have gotten sick from drinking the tap water in Cabo, which isn’t fun for anyone!
Don’t Forget These Essentials!
These items are crucial for your trip to Cabo- but are easily forgotten in the excitement of things! Add these to your packing list to ensure you're prepared.
Water shoes
You'll need some good foot protection while visiting Cabo! The sandy beaches can get very hot during certain parts of the day, and some shores are rocky and don't allow barefoot walking.
Biodegradable/Reef-Friendly Sunscreen
The Sea of Cortez is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Conservation efforts have kept the beaches and water along Cabo beautiful and serene! Referred to as the "aquarium of the world," a diverse array of marine life and endangered species call the calm water their home.
If you’re planning on going in the ocean on tour or just taking a dip in the water on one of the swimmable beaches in Cabo, the right sunscreen is necessary. The chemicals in traditional sunscreens can damage the ocean and its ecosystems, so we all want to do our part in protecting it!
